Identifying parent bodies of meteorites among near-Earth asteroids

چکیده

Abstract Meteorites provide an important source of information about the formation and composition asteroids, because level accuracy studies analyses performed in a laboratory cannot be achieved by any ground or space based observation. To better understand what asteroid types meteorite represents, it is crucial to identify body they originated from. In this paper, we aim determine possible parent bodies for known falls among population near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). By using similarity criterion DN, on geocentric quantities, found 20 NEA-meteorite pairs. performing additional numerical simulations backward dynamics, that 12 these pairs may associated with separation event from progenitor NEA, while remaining 8 appear ambiguous random associations. The most interesting are Pribram Neuschwanstein meteorites, which dynamically (482488) 2012 SW20 common age dating back 20−30 kyr ago, Motopi Pan meteorite, has three candidate bodies: (454100) 2013 BO73, 2017 MC3, 2009 FZ4. average time between our list appears 10 kyr, consistent expected collision frequency small NEAs. Based results, suggest 25 per cent meteorites do not originate main belt, but mainly little events happening NEAs inner Solar System.

Linking Meteorites to Asteroids: How Many Parent Bodies Do We Sample in Our Meteorite Collections?

Introduction: Meteorites provide us with a great diversity of extraterrestrial materials. However, to interpret this record effectively we need to evaluate its relationship, both to the contemporary asteroid population and to how that population has evolved with time. This involves addressing a number of key issues: i) how many asteroids/parent bodies are represented in the worldwide meteorite ...

Capturing near-Earth asteroids around Earth

The list of detected near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) is constantly growing. NEAs are likely targets for resources to support space industrialization, as they may be the least expensive source of certain needed raw materials. The limited supply of precious metals and semiconducting elements on Earth may be supplemented or even replaced by the reserves floating in the form of asteroids around the sol...

Spectral Properties of Near-Earth Asteroids: Evidence for Sources of Ordinary Chondrite Meteorites

Although ordinary chondrite (OC) meteorites dominate observed falls, the identification of near-Earth and main-belt asteroid sources has remained elusive. Telescopic measurements of 35 near-Earth asteroids ( approximately3 kilometers in diameter) revealed six that have visible wavelength spectra similar to laboratory spectra of OC meteorites. Near-Earth asteroids were found to have spectral pro...

Compositional properties of Near-Earth Asteroids: spectroscopic comparison with Ordinary Chondrite Meteorites

Some years ago we started a spectroscopic survey, in the visible region, of Earth-approaching asteroids to investigate their compositional nature in order to improve the comprehension of their origin. To date we have obtained low-resolution spectra, in the range 0.5-1.0 μm, of 1 Aten (3753 1986 TO), 4 Apollo (1864 Daedalus, 5786 Talos, 1989 JA, 2063 Bacchus), and 3 Amor (3352McAuliffe, 4954 Eri...

EURONEAR - Data Mining of Asteroids and Near Earth Asteroids

Besides new observations, mining old photographic plates and CCD image archives represents an opportunity to recover and secure newly discovered asteroids, also to improve the orbits of Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs), Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) and Virtual Impactors (VIs). These are the main research aims of the EURONEAR network. As stated by the IAU, the vast collection of image archi...
